Tourism 2016: the best social media projects (and other stories)
Steve KeenanDecember 22, 2016
We were back at World Travel Market in London in November, presenting our sixth year of social media seminars at the show.
We initiated the social media programme back in 2011 – back then, the talk was all about best use of Twitter, how to use a hashtag or the basics of blogging. My, how the seminars have evolved…
This year, we ran eight sessions over two days, again highlighting best practise as platforms and digital marketing continue to evolve at a giddy pace. For example, we had one session on Pokemon for tourism gaming and augmented reality, and a very topical debate on Content in Crisis: independent blog – or undisclosed advertising?
We had two repeat sessions that are well-loved: the best travel start-up, and the best social media project of the year. The winner for 2016 was Visit Finland/Finnair for their extraordinary Polar Night Magic project.
We have also written up a report, plus video, of our annual Silk Road seminar run in conjunction with the UN World Tourism Organisation. It’s fascinating to see how important social media is to the project’s ongoing development: do read the report to find out more.
Many thanks to WTM London for kindly live streaming and some of our sessions, so you can catch up in your own time – just click on the links above. And do catch up with a Digital Influence Unplanned panel, in which I took part, to close the show.
See you at WTM next year.
